Donegal ETB Chairperson Cllr Rena Donaghey officially opened the new Buncrana Youthreach Centre on Thursday 23 November 2017. Youthreach is part of Donegal ETB’s Further Education and Training (FET) Service and provides a wide range of education, training and work experience opportunities for young people in a wide variety of subject areas including art, catering, childcare, communications, computers, hairdressing, maths, metalwork and woodwork, leading to major QQI awards at Levels 2 and 4 (General Learning) and 3 (Employability Skills).
Youthreach began in Inishowen in 1991 in the Adult Education and Training Centre on the Shore Road of Buncrana. An outreach centre opened in Glengad in 1999 and the Youthreach programme in Inishowen today, 26 years later, caters for 38 young people.
It is also part of Donegal ETB’s wider education and training provision throughout Inishowen which also includes programmes delivered through the Buncrana Adult Education and Training Centre and other education and training programmes delivered by the ETB’s Training Services or supported by its Community Education Support Programme, as well as its three schools in Crana College and Coláiste Chineál Eoghain in Buncrana and Moville Community College.
The opening was attended by many family and friends of current and past learners and the many friends of the programme from local schools, Department of Employment Action and Social Protection, Inishowen Development Partnership, An Garda Síochána and the Donegal Women’s Centre, to name a few. This event was also part of Donegal ETB’s Further Education and Training (FET) Service’s programme of events for College Awareness Week and European Vocational Skills Week
